There is much to dispute in regards to the various opinions about American policies and world affairs. However, there is nothing to dispute regarding innocent deaths. Blaming innocent people and walking on their graves is indecent and inhuman. The problem (under emotional strain) is in being careful enough to know what is being said...and how precise any particular message is intended to read. I agree that any blaming of victims is repulsive. But that concept must always remain separate from fair comment on culpability in related matters. The world is a gigantic system. Some have yo-yo's, some have balls, some have bicycles, and some have shoes. Conflict is generally not based on "evil". Some of the worst punks in the world will be decent if they get a suit and a salary. Conflict stems from a differential in power. It has always been so, and will be always. Religious conflict is merely a proxy for an underlying inequality. This does not mean that America needs to carry "blame". But it does mean that if it wishes to survive it must be thoughtful, intelligent, and pragmatic.

I don't think it is actually blaming the victims. What he seems to be saying is what many people have said- our foreign policies (not always wise, and often very self interested) came home to roost with this attack. That is not to say the victims deserved to die, it is saying there was a reason why the US was attacked. Surely you agree that the terrorists had reasons. We don't have to agree with those reasons in order to discuss them. Or I don't.
