My Nikon CoolPix does it with the press of a button.

Also, various of my flash memory cards (various formats) show up as ordinary disks on my desktop, and their contents can be moved, erased, renamed, etc. I assume that standard disk formatting commands would work, modulo the different type of formatting (e.g., no "sectors" to worry about). I haven't tried this, however.

I am reminded of how risk averse we have become when I go to Australia where one can still open the train window and hang out if he has the cahones.
