Ted,

What's interesting about that period of time is why we felt the need to arm the Afghans. I understand the Russians were trying to take over the country but what exactly was the special interest we were trying to protect.......downtown Kabul, opium, the sand, what? All the money that was blown. Its amazing.

If you don't know the answer, than you have no understanding of history of 20th century.

Joe

To keep USSR from reaching the Indian Ocean. For decades they wanted a rout to reach water through south. Through Afghanistan (and then Pakistan) was really the only choice since Iran and the Shah was already pretty cozy with US. Had they been successful, it would have been a big blow in the cold war. Afgans, Osama and his gang were the tool and they had the will, US showed them the way.

History is full of such Ironic incidents. Saddam staying in power in the late eighties, toward the end of the war with Iran is another.

Make sure you read my previous post. Reaching the Indian Ocean was a long held desire for the communist USSR and for good reasons. I believe it was promoted heavily be Lenin.
