I don't think anybody is proposing abandoning Israel. There are many routes that haven't been taken toward inducing them along the path of a conclusive deal with the Palestinians.

A recent piece in Haaretz by an Israeli commentator argued that it had become abundantly evident that the Israelis and Palestinians were incapable of reaching an agreement, and that only forcible intervention, an imposed plan, sponsored by the US would bring the miserable killing to an end. I wish i could remember the author, I'd search for it and post it.

: Shall US foreign policy be dictated in Amman and Tripoli and in the Arab street?

No, but rage in the streets should surely be avoided whenever possible. Surely, for example, the US needs to take intelligent account of its many infrastructural vulnerabilities abroad... Schools, charities, diplomatic and military and commercial estabishments, etc, are vulnerable to rage in the streets. And so are governments friendly to us. It seems to me it would be folly not to include this simple truth in our calculations.

Edit: I'll be out for the day, probably until late. Have fun, all.

The Arabs had Israel on the ropes and would have destroyed it had it not been
for US intervention.

The only way we intervened is by giving them weapons. Meanwhile the Arab countries where getting weapons from the USSR.
