mjfdl,

But the NRA wants us to have anything that can be picked up and shoulder fired.

Myself - I want a few SAM-7's in case any aircraft come at the house :-)

<<..Lets keep the small arms as our Founding Fathers intended, and regulate the military stuff...>>

That sounds like a reasonable compromise...lets fingerprint gunowners and get an UP-TO-DATE national database that will allow authorities to track criminals more effectively.

Hi mjfdl; Re: "Lets keep the small arms as our Founding Fathers intended, and regulate the military stuff."

The "Founding Fathers" allowed the private ownership of any military weapon at all. They placed no limitations on, for example, how many guns a private ship could mount. The result was that during the war of 1812, privateers mounted 5x as many cannon as US government owned ships, and captured 5x as many enemy ships.

These are well known facts of military history. See, for example, the US Merchant Marine organization website:

A friend of mine uses .50 and above caliber rifles for hunting moose, elk, deer, etc. They cost a LOT of money, thousands, and the scopes are expensive, too.
