I agree with you fully. If this is justifiable, ANYTHING is justifiable. Why not have the gov't provide all the kids with kites and bikes Leggos? That's entertainment for them. Why should they be discriminated against?

Some people are nudists. Why not government-funded nudist clubs?

And, in particular, why spend large amounts of government money on activities enjoyed by only a handful of the population, such as opera and theater?

But ultimately, which should gov't be in the entertainment industry at all? Private industry can do and has done a fine job in this area.
