I disagree with you about the relative importance and necessity of defense and the arts. I think they're both important. Equally so.

Art reminds us of what we share with every other human being, over every period of history. It's humanizing. It's the balance to defense/offense spending.

I know you don't agree. I'm not asking you to. I'm just pointing out that intelligent people, people who you respect, can disagree with you about this.
