I view a healthy and thriving humanities culture as a form of defense spending. It creates an environment that encourages people to aspire, to respect and celebrate humanity, and also to enjoy life. People whose aspirations have been nurtured create more; people who respect and celebrate life are less likely to practice and preach hatred; and people who enjoy life are less likely to be destructive.

Sure, defense spending is essential, for without defense there is nothing to defend or enjoy. The real question is, should arts and culture and public spaces that inspire and enhance life be government funded. I believe that to a degree, they ought to be, though there is a place for private funding as well. I think it is short sighted to impose a reflexive rule that government shall not support the arts at all.
