That was beautifully said, OMD. And I agree. Most of the writers and artists with whom I've come into contact support their art by teaching or doing a variety of other jobs. Very few receive NEA granted, which are notoriously difficult to win. We depend a great deal on private funding, as well as our own jobs, to support the production of art because we believe it's a humanizing force.

Tim is simply trying to prioritise the spending....

My country may have excellent art and culture but what if the neighbouring country has none and is simply a war machine ? What good would my rich cultural heritage do then ?

Isn't this exactly what happened to India ? Rich art and culture...no defense. First the Moghuls and then the British plundered it for centuries.

Now, with the nuclear capability, things are different...although govt spending on art and culture did suffer in the process...

Food for thought.

Senator killed in Minnesota plane crash

Friday, October 25, 2002 Posted: 1:52 PM EDT (1752 GMT)

EVELETH, Minnesota (CNN) -- Sen.
Paul Wellstone, a Democrat from
Minnesota, was killed in a small
plane crash Friday about seven
miles east of Eveleth-Virginia
Municipal Airport, authorities said.

Eight people were reported aboard the
plane -- a twin-engine turboprop King Air
manufactured by Raytheon Aircraft.

Wellstone held a key Democratic seat in
the U.S. Senate and was criss-crossing
the state in a tough re-election campaign
against former St. Paul Mayor Norm
Coleman.

CNN's John King reported that White
House sources confirmed there were
fatalities in the accident -- and that Sen. Wellstone was on the plane's manifest.

Wellstone, 58, was first elected to the Senate in 1990. Before that he worked as a
teacher and political science professor at Carleton College in Northfield, Minnesota.

Shall I get the cart and pony to haul away that manure? :-)

People whose aspirations have been nurtured create more; people who respect and celebrate life are less likely to practice and preach hatred; and people who enjoy life are less likely to be destructive.
Fine sentiments. When you get the likes of Joe Stalin, Adolph Hitler, et al, to agree to try to raise less aggressive populations, it might even work. But doing it unilaterally works as well as unilateral disarmament.

The real question is, should arts and culture and public spaces that inspire and enhance life be government funded. I believe that to a degree, they ought to be, though there is a place for private funding as well.
Oh. Well. And where shall we draw that line? I think sailing is very much a fine art. You and Poet should provide money for me to buy yet another boat. OK?
