Maoris were a migratory species from the Cook Islands [cuzzies went to Hawaii and Eastward Ho to Easter Island]. The Euros were from all over Europe, but mainly Britain, including Ireland. It was mainly young and daring people heading for a better life. There were no deportees here. That was to Australia. In recent decades there have been swarms from Asia. Auckland is becoming like little Hong Kong. The Brits were easy to kick off the real estate. They were quite genteel and not given to genocide to maintain empire, contrary to popular mythology. They preferred bribery, divide and rule, mercantile activity and the temptations of civilization to entice adherents. Hence the missionary emphasis bringing the ethics of modernity to replace the cannibalistic barbarisms of the stone age. Mqurice
