This is why our foreign policy is incompatible with reality. Reality is that we have no real reason to support Israel and piss off the Arabs. Sure you do. Israelis are modern. The arabs are archaic. The Israelis believe in democracy and reason. The arabs (in the ME) believe in rulers and faith. The Arabs are your enemy. Yes, Carl, they are. At least, the ones you say are "pissed off", are. They say they're your enemy and act on it. Israel is a threat to them only because it might come to an accommodation with the Palestinians and that would turn the new 'Israel-Palestine' into the great, modern Middle-Eastern powerhouse, subversive of every regime in the area. That is why they support such a disgusting person as Arafat and that is why they pump out the anti-American and anti-jew propaganda. The reason part of the modern paradigm lost its war in the muslim world about a thousand years ago - "Faith Trumps Science" would have been the New York Post headline then. Reason started making a comeback when the Europeans arrived in the Muslim world about two hundred years ago but recently an unfortunate intersection of vast wealth and political position for a backward ME family refinanced the forces of unreason. Because the forces of unreason are already looking very insecure in Iran it's definitely not time to retreat from the ME but rather it's time to turn up the pressure and deliver more modernity and chase the forces of unreason from the Eastern Mediterranean and the forces of anti-democracy from Iraq and Syria. ........................ You think your fellow citizens aren't up to dealing with terrorists because the folk in the Washington area were disordered and panicked in their response to the snipers. They haven't seen this sort of thing before, that's all. If it happens again you'll probably find their response far more ordered and less panicked. Folk learn. Even in the last incident there were unofficial citizens out and about looking for these guys. Even after all these years, folk still want to bring up the ghost of poor Kitty Genovese, despite all the thousands, if not millions of times, people have "got involved" and come the rescue of others. If your country comes under more consistent attack, folk will be even more likely to come to each other's assistance.
