Searle,

From memory the Federal government was quite bullying and intrusive in the 1960's for that matter. Freedoms taken away generally come from the left--can't have a statue of Moses in your hometown park, can't develop your property the way you see fit, can't serve your coffee hot at a diner because some trial lawyer will take you to court and sue your a$$ off, can't sing a Christmas song at school or have a Boy Scout meeting there, can't wear a fur coat without the risk of a spraypainting, can't have a job without paying some lame union that supports much of the above, it's sickening.

The main underlying worry about being "watched" by the government is too little too late. Once we allowed Social Security numbers to be issued it was a done deal. They could track virtually anything about us back then. That was the biggest hurdle for organizing a government 1984 style bureaucracy and it was Democrat Roosevelt who did it. Anyone who doubts this has their head in the sand.

This is what Charley Reese has to say.

reese.king-online.com

>>>The whole world knows that the U.S. government has allowed itself to become the puppet of Israel and that the Israeli government has politically gone mad. When the leading choice for leaders is either Benjamin Netanyahu or Ariel Sharon, there is not a ghost of a chance for peace with the Palestinians. Both men foolishly believe that they can annihilate the Palestinians with brute force. This policy, and our unquestioning support for it, is what fuels hatred for the United States in the Arab world. Like it or not, that's the truth.<<<

Searle,

"Frankly, that's what I think the "terrorism" is all about. Other people in the world also wish to be independent and free of outside (= US) interference"

They sure have a funny way of showing it.

"I can't imagine why you, or anyone else, thinks I am treading on them."

I don't! I did say that some of what I was writing was TIC (Tongue in Cheek). The intent of my response was to show that some of us here do not believe in what the government is doing, and that we may fight back if they get to pushy!

"Thank you and I'm happy to be your friend. But don't count on me to patronize you!"

I was not trying to patronize you, and I did not think that you would reciprocate if I did. I was trying to show that there are a lot of people who agree with a lot of what you say, and may not take what our government is feeding us. However, we did elect them and they are ours, so we do not like others telling us what we already know. I do not consider you an outsider, but what you are saying can get under the hide of some. I do not want or expect to be patronized, but I do expect to be listened to on occasion. I will reciprocate. I do not condemn you for what you say, but sometimes I do disagree. The right to disagree is where we started from. To all have to think alike does not bode well for the world.
Terry

Searle, I hope you don't mind my interjection on the subject of government intrusion.

As long as you are commenting on the USA from a standpoint of your democracy and ours and not because you are Mohabbi Islam or radical Christian extremist, I personally welcome your comments. We certainly have enough graft to go around.

Terry's comments are very common in many southern and western states in particular. They come up close to white supremacy. I agree with some of their ideas but we might as well face it. We are a multicultural country, and many pockets of ARabs, Chinese, Mexican, Russian, Asian, East Indian and what have you exist and we are far from the country that went into WW2 by putting all Japanese into camps to protect ourselves. Also McArthianism was alive and well.
With the Republicans in power we will see a partial return that I believe will center us from the far left moving to the moderate right. I personally think we are headed in the right direction.(hopefully.)

Anyway, for certain this is no longer whites only and we must somehow learn to live with other Americans with ethnic backgrounds. IMO, the ethnic groups need to join us and quit demanding that old cultures and languages be kept as the major part of their lives. Speak American, be American. Acceptance has to come from both sides of the coin.
