yes an engine can be lost in the 1st 5k feet of altitude and recovered.

I guess the training went way up after they lost a DC-10 on takeoff out of O'Hare years ago. That was the one where the engine dropped off due to poor maintenance. I remember reading at the time that the Pilot should have been able to save it if he had reacted in time. The problem in that case was made worse by the fact that there was no explosion involved. Just "Clunk," and they dove into the ground.

When you're at low altitude, this maneuver would be problematical, as it would involve interference with the ground.
