It's fireplace, candles, and family games.

That sounds so sweet, but family games here tend to involve bloodshed and mayhem. They are all fanatical wargamers. All their friends are fanatical wargamers. They fanatically play wargames together at least once a week, and when they are not playing wargames there are computer wargames (which, of course, require electricity).

When people come over here for games my husband always invites me to play but he knows I won't. The joke is, "would you rather play games with us or have bamboo shoots shoved under your fingernails?" and I say "bamboo."

Every so often he buys me a game that he hopes I will like -- a couple of law related games, even a couple of investment related games. One on foreign exchange looks really interesting.

I can sometimes get them to play a game I'd like to play due to the novelty of Mom playing a game, but eventually death and dismemberment find their way in somehow.

You have girls, right?

BTW - candles are a good idea, and batteries. Our electric lines are underground, but ice storms sometimes knock out something large and far away and leave entire towns without electricity.

We have an entire cord of oak, nice and dry, but it does not put out much heat. If we lost power for a long time, we'd have to drag the mattresses down to the rec room (where the fireplace is) and all bed down together with the dog and the six cats.

Reminder to self - add kitty litter to the check list.
