speaking of turtles:
Dodgy Turtle Kills Three, Poisons 94

PHNOM PENH (Reuters) - A dodgy Cambodian turtle has killed three people and poisoned more than 90 others in a remote coastal village in the impoverished Southeast Asian nation, officials said on Saturday.

"So far, two children and one man have died because they ate this sea turtle," Ban Saron, the local district chief, told Reuters. "I can't believe it. How has this turtle poisoned them? This sort is normally fine." The offending beast, which weighed in at around 110 pounds, was netted by fishermen in the Gulf of Thailand five days ago before ending up on the menu of the village in Mitapheap district, near the Cambodian port of Sihanoukville.

Many of the turtle's 94 victims, who went down with vomiting and diarrhea soon after their dinner, were still in hospital, Ban Saron said.

Weird and wonderful wild animals have been a staple in Cambodian cooking ever since the dark days of the Khmer Rouge (news - web sites) and the genocide of the "killing fields," in which 1.7 million people are thought to have died.

Anything from turtles and tortoises to snakes and spiders have been transformed from the sustenance of desperate refugees into choice national delicacies.
