"Unnecessary" indicates that I do believe there is a threat that must be met, in this new world.
The United States went through a very bloody, very nasty civil war where the enemy looked just like us (and was us) with the 1st Amendment intact (although habeas corpus was suspended). I think we can make through this.

If the gov't lets us.

I do believe there is a threat that must be met, in this new world. My fear and expectation is that it will be not just met, but exploited.

Whereas mine is that the threat will not *even* be met, certainly by these means which are so palpably irrelevant... but nevertheless exploited.

<edit> I don't have the Hitchens article. I like his libertarian stuff, no surprise there ;-)
