He appears to have the makings of a great president. I sincerely hope the liberals aren't able to derail him midway through on the bogus economy issues like they did Bush 41.

You have a distorted way of looking at things. This is Bush's mess. His and his henchmen's. Clinton understood that NK needed to be contained and he did. Bush's diplomacy can be summed up in simple terms...Intimidate others into hopeful dissolution or genuflection...so he reduces complex problems to oversimplified terms, crosses his fingers and hopes a few antagonistic Reaganeske remarks work to make the problem go away. And now he has a mess on his hands. His mess. His doing. Not Clinton's...not Carter's. This man and his cabinet are dangerous and incompetent.

I hope you are watching Fox just now. You pal Hackworth just said that Rumsfeld is smoking dope when he says that we can fight Iraq and NK at the same time...he also said that Bush should call Carter to the rescue to go negotiate us out of this mess. He also said that we (the US) should leave Korea. All we need now is for China to threaten the taking of Taiwan or actually do it.

David,

The liberal mind is a terrible thing.

Using the outstanding liberal Cable News Network:

Carter was surprised?
cnn.com
Carter also said that recent admissions by North Korean officials that they have pushed ahead with developing nuclear capability came as a surprise to him.

Oil was cut off after North Korea admitted they violated the 1994 Clinton/Carter agreement.
cnn.com
The international consortium charged with implementing a 1994 energy agreement with North Korea agreed Thursday to suspend fuel oil deliveries to the Communist nation after Pyongyang's revelation last month it has a secret nuclear weapons program.

What did Albright know and when did she know it?
cnn.com
U.S. Secretary of State Madeleine Albright said Wednesday it is "absolutely essential" for North Korea to disclose details of its nuclear weapons capabilities if its relations with the United States are to reach their potential.

If anything, Clinton didn't keep up his end of the bargain paying off the North Korean extortionists.
cnn.com
"The North Koreans believe that the Clinton administration promised them a very large amount of money to abandon their nuclear weapons program," said David Kay, a former U.N. weapons inspector. "They also believe the Japanese promised them large assistance as part of that same deal. They've not yet seen this assistance."

Ignoring your enemies or meeting their extortion demands is a failed horrible foreign policy.

The fact that NK is now becoming more beligerent has nothing to do with Bush; it has everything to do with its newfound power. Had Clinton's policy adequately contained NK, we wouldn't be in this fix. Your argument, apparently, is that Bush precipitated NK's actions with his "axis of evil" speech.

This is pure unadulterated tripe. According to your somewhat suspect take on world history, Mr. long jims has had these new found powers since 1998. Yet, he didn't choose to act out on these powers until 2002. You do the math.

The truth is Mr. Bush's inexperience in foreign policy matters has forced the US into a position where we have no choice but to put ammo where Mr. Bush's and Cheney's and Rumsfield's collective mouths have been these past months to show that we mean business. At this late stage, almost our only recourse is to start a multi front war.

Of course, during moments of rare clarity, you see this scenario as it is and it scares the bejezus out of you. However, because of your undying commitment to a conservative ideology, you are too afraid to admit you might be wrong and keep putting your faith in the somewhat suspect capabilities of Mr. Bush and company.

However, even the stupidest of fools can see the dangerous mess we are in.
