A foul tip that is deflected 45 degrees -- that is, toward the pressbox -- is on a trajectory to travel much farther than the pitch could have traveled. If each were allowed to "fly to level ground," the foul tip would far outdistance the pitch. A 90mph fastball that crosses the plate in the middle of the strike zone will hit the ground before reaching the screen in every major-league park I've ever seen.
