When I was in school, the dairy industry was so powerful that they had convinced the government that pizza (and presumably calzones, though we didn't have those out in the provinces) was health food. The rationale? It included something from all four "basic food groups": Bread (dough); fruits (tomato sauce, which I guess is a fruit, and whatever fruit like pineapple you might put on); veggies (tomato sauce, which I guess is also a vegetable, and whatever veggies you put on the pizza); meat/dairy (cheese and whatever meat you put on).

I guess the foundation for the current diabetes and obesity epidemics was being laid back then.
