Hold on, the clinton deal in 2000 provided for almost all of that, yet Arafat responded (when he couldn't get everything he wanted) by using suicide bombers. Also, didn't Arafat, when he signed the Oslo Accord, agree to disavow the use of terrorism. The clinton deal was a good one for the palestinians and Israel, imo, and Arafat's decision to use violence reveals his "wild hatred." The Arab media in the middle east is rife with antisemitism and jewish hate-mongering. How do you interpret Arab newspaper articles that depict jewish people eating gentiles at religious events as something not based on "wild hatred." I recall seeing that picture of PA folks with smiles and blood on their hands at a jail window celebrating the ripping to shreds of captured Israelis.

You are right, of course.

And I believe he was saying it ironically, of course. In any case, you apparently believe appeasement breeds moderation. The rest of us think that peace is attained and maintained through strength, not capitulation. The Israelis, who are the ones who get killed, are moving over to our view. They have too many graves from the times they went with labor and tried your view.

Funny how only I get clobbered when I say this :)

That's because you look at this world through far rosier lenses than most of the rest of us... :0)

Hand Arafat keys to a sovereign State, and all the wild hatred will be all but gone. Instantly.

Definitely spoken with tongue planted firmly in cheek... (or else I'm due for some ESL courses too.. :0)

And there's not a chance in h*ll that "peace" will break out in Palestine until the militant leaders and their armed networks of terrorists are eliminaated or neutralized and moderate politicos come to forefront in the PA.

Arafat has never had a vested interest in a lasting peace in an independent Palestine. He would not be able to gain any respect from the rest of the despotic Arab leaders with whom he's associated were he not continually hostile to Israel...

Which is one more reason that the structure of systemic hatred has to be unwound in the middle east. To remove those regimes who seek to use the Israeli Palestinian issue as a means for perpetuating turmoil in the region.

Hello, Zonder. I know that you know that I wrote those words with… intense sarcasm. (No wonder you put in a ‘smily’ after “agreeing” with me -g).

I have no doubts that a person as intelligent as you can see the disastrous consequences of just handing over statehood into the hands of the old Chairman. It would be an absolute thugocracy, and a disaster for the local population, as well as for the peace in the region.

I think that President Bush made the right decision: Show us progress, develop a democratic infrastructure, which would be capable of taking care of the new country, show us that you are able to build a peaceful future – and we WILL step up to your support.
