Mike,

Do you deny that this is the first recessionary cycle since the Second World War when the Federal Government has refused to ameliorate the pain for the states?

We have the madness of a newly proposed $675 Billion tax giveaway to rich, coupled with insanely profligate spending on the Department of Death and the Feds can't lift a finger for the states. Something is terribly wrong with this picture.

Bravo, Mike! An excellent and wise post.

Ray is an unreconstructed big government wannabe socialist despot, so you won't get any sense out of him.

Here in Massachusetts (taxachusetts) we had a "temporary" state income tax increase from 5% to 6% to close the state budget gap back in the '90-'91 recession. Through the booming '90s our Democrat-dominated state government found any and every reason not to roll back the "temporary" tax increase. It wasn't until '99 that a Republican governor managed to achieve a 0.25% - woo hoo - reduction.

And there you have the whole story. Politicians love taxes. The only remedy, to borrow from Milton Friedman and Ronald Reagan, is to "starve the beast." Meaning do anything and everything to deny the government new revenues and to keep government budgets in permanent deficit. This is the only, the ONLY way to prevent the pols from stealing more of our money.
