At the risk of being hooted from the thread, I note that the original question referred to the greatest American general, not just of the War Between the States, but of all time. Let us not be so parochial as to forget Washington, Pershing, McArthur, Patton, and a few others who had the bad fortune to miss the big one.

But at risk of pulling the thread off from its 1860's focus, shall we assume all future discussion is of the greatest Civil War generals?

But if you gave Lee his forces and logistic support, and gave Grant Lee's forces and logistical support who do you think would have won?

Given the same men and equipment, Lee or Jackson would have kicked Grant's butt into Canada.

General Grant understood how to win a war of attrition against an opponent with inferior forces and no source of resupply.

At Cold Harbor, Grant stole some of Burnside's tactics and he slaughtered thousands of his men in a few moments. However, knowing he had more soldiers coming, he continued his flanking movement against Lee until he reached the outskirts of Richmond.

I made the mistake of saying that General Lee was the greatest American General. However, every war has different types of generals who are required to apply themselves in a different manner. My comments were too broad.
