So long as the terrorism stuff goes to Bush, he can hide the rest of the agenda, almost in full view. The minute he loses the terrorism vote, he's in trouble. That's why I expect them to keep the war talk going for a very long time. A succesful Iraqi invasion will be followed by something.

In a word or two, isolationism doesn't work, not at this time and place in history in which the globe becomes smaller by the day.

September 11, 2001, was the end of the Golden Nineties. Our self-preservation is at stake now. If you can't accept the notion that our enemies would like to make 9/11 seem like a Kindergarten school fair, and that we need to prevent a worse disaster, by preemption if necessary, and that a lot of hard choices and sacrifices may be needed, then the only thing I'm grateful for is that your views appear to be those of the minority.

Genuine beliefs have nothing to do with it, eh? No chance of their acting out of true concern?

Sounds very much like that lives vs elections comment you were so offended by the other day...

<<...A succesful Iraqi invasion will be followed by something...>>

What if its an increasing number of Al Qaeda attacks on American interests...?

Why have the traditional media outlets all hired folks like Pollack and retired Generals as 'analysts'..? Everyone seems to be in favor of invading Iraq...You have to hunt around (usually on C-SPAN or public TV) to get another perspective. Why aren't the traditional TV News networks setting up debates between Pollack and Mersheimer..? Why don't we see debates between a former General and Ellsberg..? Is the public getting News that's 'fair AND balanced'...? War is a serious business and IMO it should be debated thoroughly (BEFORE THE BOMBS DROP).

Save those miserable campaign appearances in which we have the straight political talk about "all the people."

We both know what the campaign appearances on both sides are. "Wave and Smile." The "Religious" comments today, and C2's comment:

"The American public will take some solace from the fact that Bush has a higher Consultant from whom he seeks advice. They will resent anyone who attacks this solace by attacking his religious views."

brings to mind that the Pollsters have to go back to a method they used with Reagan if they want to get correct numbers. People are voting their "Values," not the "Issues." I listened to Brian Lamb do an hour this morning on CSPAN with a couple of former speech-writers, one Clinton, one 41. They went through a series of phone calls, where they specifically had them qualified as Gore voters who had watched Bush give his SOTU, and asked them what they thought of Bush and the speech. They were all "Pro-Bush" after the speech. They were all talking about values. Lamb stopped a couple of the callers in the middle and confirmed that they had not been Bush supporters. He seemed surprised at the results. (To the extent that Brian ever shows any emotion!)

The Clinton speech-writer said that he watched the College discussion of the speech that CSPAN had shown right after. I gather that they had a group of students set up. The speech-writer, Jeff Shesol, was amazed at the positive response by the students.

I think it is going to take more than just doing the "Laundry List" of issues that energize you and the Dem party to beat this guy, John.
