What is it with you guys who think lack of support from Germany or France translates into no support at all.

Chris Hitchens last night properly described the situation as "France and Germany" acting unilaterally. I think this is an apt description.

Need is a funny word.....all we need to wage war is Turkey or Kuwait but what we really need is the support of our strongest allies.<

What is it with you guys who think lack of support from Germany or France translates into no support at all.

While its great that Poland and the Czech Republic et al support us, they're the cheerleaders, not the players. There is nothing substantive coming from their corner; no armaments or manpower will be provided. On the other hand, both Germany and France can contribute substantively.....plus they are Europe.

Secondly, whether the right recognizes it or not, this is a very controversial move on the part of the US. Much more controversial that any war since probably Vietnam. In situations like this one, you want all your key players in place for a whole host of reasons.

Thirdly, the fact that key players are shying away and that even those who in place are having trouble maintaining their support should tell you something. I don't listen to other people's opinions 'cause I want to be liked.....I listen to others because I might learn something.

Bush announced that 14 of 18 NATO members supported the US position.

What 14? I count 8.

Only 4 support Frances and Germany's side.

Germany is equal to the seven beside the Brits. You're fooling yourself if you think otherwise.

What makes you think, after Powells speech they won't jump onboard.

Could be........but I think you underestimate the world wide opposition to this war.

All they are trying to do is play to the crowds, not lead the crowd. Secondly, when has the US ever had unanimous support. I bet Bill didn't have that percentage of UN support when he went into Bosnia, so what is so important about it now, other than the fact GW is republican, and you hate GW.

You know its never been an issue in my lifetime. Its rare that I have experienced this level of hate towards the US by people outside the US. The fact that people in Europe are organizing protest letters to send to the UN, that there are anti war marches weekly, and that Blair is getting booed down from the floor of Parliament speak volumes.

I believe the die has been cast and it truly doesn't matter what I believe but I don't think this one will go well. FWIW.
