all those meager pay, supplemental income jobs enticing retirees back to work and laid off IT workers with exhausted unemployment benefits finally getting off the dole??

No:) Everyone I know is working under 40 and laying off people. I think their full of shit to be blunt.

Steve Lee had an interesting explanation and there appear to be an awful lot of assumptions with these numbers which makes them total BS.

"It's a seasonally adjusted figure. The seasonal adjustment assumes that extra staff, especially in retail, are hired for the christmas period. In then assumes that those extra staff, are laid off after christmas.
The christmas hiring didn't happen, so now the expected level of layoffs didn't happen either. Hence the seasonally adjusted increase in jobs, especially retail."
