I am not well versed either. I have read something or other by him, but the name is escaping me right now. Of course, I grew up visiting occasional battlefields, like Gettysburg and Manassas, so I learned a little there. Most, I have been interested in topics like slavery and the economics of the Deep South, rather than battles, though.......

I remember that Foote impressed the hell out of me on Ken Burn's "Civil War" series...

Tony Horwitz has some interesting observations regarding Foote in his excellent book Confederates In The Attic.

For starters, Foote has a listed number in Memphis and answers the phone himself.

BTW, I think that they should have gotten Foote to play RE Lee in the movies Gettysburg and Gods and Generals. He fits the bill a heck of a lot better than Martin Sheen, but to be fair to Robert Duvall, I haven't seen his turn in G&G yet.

Read those books of Foote's, I thought they were very slanted towards the South. He doesn't give Sherman credit for much of anything. Be interested in your take after you read them.
