"They are fatally compromised and have been for decades"

They have designs for European power with themselves as the major player. They are no more "fatally compromised" than are other arrogant nations. :-) It is just that their self interest IS self interest--not kissing ass to the self interest of others.

It is their sense of distinctiveness (and perhaps their sense of cultural and moral "superority") which makes them a difficult alliance member to accomodate. In the long run, however, I believe they are assisting us unwittingly by preventing reckless speed and forcing us to forge alliances and mutual cooperation with others. We all know that without opposition there is a tendency to be overbearing or less than thoughtful about positions and actions. Anyone who has ever been brought up short by a spouse (pun intended)...is aware of this! Or if you've ever manned a 65 foot sailing boat, you would also be aware of the tendency...:-)

We've discussed this before: I believe that people need sometimes to be cognizant of the pragmatic consequences to which their principles may best be aimed. It is like a trial: Jury manipulation, timing, presentation, and so forth are all crucial to the process and to the consequence.

Do you remember that old doggerel!

Here lies the body of William Jay,
Who died defending his right of way;

He was right dead right as he sped along,
But he's just as dead as if he were wrong!
