Why not?

A prudent question from the US perspective would be "What do they have to offer?". As a state that would be a sitting duck in the hinterland in perpetuity, I can't think of a good reason to take them in. What advantages do you see other than the immediate short term relief (perhaps)?

It is an intriguing idea. You would need to have a 'Vatican City' type solution for Jerusalem. With Jordan you could start the AMEFTA strategy (American Middle East Free Trade Agreement, in the end the only real sustainable peaceful solution).

Israel has a sense of national identity that makes American Patriotism seem introverted so I can't see them being happy as the Persian Hawaii.

The Tim McVeigh's of the US would have a hey day.

Al Qaeda from the outside,
Skinheads from the inside,
here I am,
Stuck in the Middle with You.

Go AMEFTA Go.

Paul

Your arguments make perfect sense from the Israeli viewpoint. There are a number of reasons why Israelis might want statehood. I can’t think of one good reason why Americans would want it.

Of course if Israelis ever got it – which of course they won’t – they might not find it so pleasant. The Palestinian population would become US citizens as well, with exactly the same rights that the Jewish population would have. They would no longer need bombs, they’d have the court system. I don’t think a lot of Israelis would find that very congenial
