My objection is this: personally I would prefer not to see this thread turn into the George W. Bush thread, with two or three posters constantly quoting Goebbels and Hitler to make a pointless point.

It isn't necessary, it's a cheap rhetorical device, it's old news, it doesn't add anything, and it's below the level of what everybody expects from this thread.

...it must confine itself to a few points and repeat them over and over.

Like a certain, recent "news conference"?

Humpty Dumpty language Sun Tzu and nothing else.

The context in the US is not even remotely similar to that of pre-WWII Germany and these incessant Nazi citations are designed to push people's buttons and little else. The governments of every state put out BS jive for the masses, and this in itself is a complete non issue.

What is essential is the freedom of speech we enjoy here, that allows debates of the type on SI and the rest of the net, as well as in our press to even take place. You don't see that in China from what one hears. Or many other countries in the world.

You certainly didn't see it in National Socialist Germany.

Great quotes. Where did you get them?

There is reflexive irritation, whenever Hawks get told the historical parallels to other failed Hawk ventures. They don't want to acknowledge those parallels, it damages their self-image. Like pointing out how Bush2 has reduced his Message to a few sound-bites, endlessly repeated, and how closely this parallels Nazi propoganda techniques.

There is reflexive irritation, whenever Doves get told the historical parallels to failed Dove ventures. We don't want to acknowledge those parallels, it damages our self-image. Like when Hawks point out how much of the current European anti-anti-terrorist/Iraq talk (=pro-terrorist???; =pro-Saddam???) sounds like the 1930s appeasement of Hitler.

It's so much easier to see other people's faults.
