John,

Thanks for posting that article. It gets to the liberal case for war in a big way (and the underlying problem with civility in our national debates).

> [my excerpt] Michael Ignatieff discusses his support for the Bush administration's invasion of Iraq in the context ending the repression of the Iraqis.

A humanitarian and ethical argument would have brought me on board for support of war. But this has not been the stated objective of this invasion. It has always been an after thought to garner moral support for the action. I am sure we'd like to see democratic, humanitarian regimes who's primary goal is support of American interests. But unfortunately we cannot have it both ways. No one can serve two masters. And US foreign policy prefers to have a brutal dictator in charge that whole sells his country over to American interests than one who would keep an eye out for his own people. This principle is often reworded as "US foreign policy favors stability over democracy". As war progresses you will hear greater and greater emphasis on stability over all other issues.

' But since they say that ''the decision to wage war at this time is morally unacceptable,'' I wonder what their support for the Iraqi opposition amounts to.

This is why Hitchens, et al, have broken with the left. In an attempt to maintain their "Solidarity Forever," these people are mealymouthing about a really bad guy.

He says, " I think the consequential justifications can override the deontological ones, but only if the gains in human freedom are large and the human costs are low.", and you say, " But one must appreciate the care and precision with which Ignatieff makes his argument."

Yep, he is your kind of guy! :>)
