Anyone else having trouble reconciling anti-vietnam days with pro-iraq war present?

Interesting dilemma you're apparently having M ....

I'd suggest that it's not too difficult to reconcile looking at it objectively.

First of all, in our younger days, we are all eternal optomists without the experience of life. It's what makes being young great.

With experience comes an understanding of reality. It's what makes the experienced wise .... lol

Second, the world we live in has changed quite a bit the past 30 - 40 years. Issues today that are a real threat to civilization did not even exist then .. AIDS is one.

So, a different world with different problems requires different priorities, different solutions. It's only natural you think differently today.

I knew a great many people who stood against the Vietnam War; it's what makes me think of those in the streets today.

The fact is, 10% of those I knew against the Vietnam War were incredibly insightful, knowledgeable and, in their way, committed to their cause.

The other 90% knew absolutely nothing other than it was the "thing to do". They couldn't spell Vietnam if you spotted them Vie and nam .... and these were college educated young people.

Times have changed ... and in hindsight, someday we'll wonder how people could have thought as they do today.

My fear is that there are some folks here in NY who are fed up and will try to give some reality to the term, die in

It gets to me also. I take solace in the knowledge that this is really going to marginalize the Dems in the next election. Could almost lead to a breakup of the Party. They will be lucky to hold 40 Senate seats when this is over. And the Bush reelection will be a "Tiger Woods" parade.

The Dixie Chicks are looking for a hideout.

Here in NY we are having a die-in this morning designed to disrupt traffic to protest both the american war on iraq and the israeli war on palestine. The guy who is heading it up is a jewish american. In the jewish community he would be labeled a self-hating jew; in the american community i hereby label him a self hating american.

Michael, you and I have exchanged some relatively friendly posts over the last several weeks. But I must object to this characterization of folk who protest this invasion of Iraq. It is a disagreement, profound to be sure, about a policy issue. It is not an anti-American act.
