Hi Losty,
I just read this in today's NY Times. After the 99 deaths in the RI nightclub, it's a subject I'm still thinking about, may be good advice for others...

Stampede Survival
By C. CLAIBORNE RAY

. Is there a way to survive stampedes like the one that recently killed nightclub patrons?

A. "Stampedes were not the problem," said Paul Wertheimer of Crowd Management Strategies, a Chicago consulting firm, who has studied crowd dynamics. "These people died from crowd crushing, not running but caught motionless in a crowd surge."

Sometimes there is no way out of a crush, he said, and the only cure is prevention, with crowd control and ample exits. But certain precautions may help.

First, having prepared yourself by noting all the exits, take the path of least resistance, not necessarily the one to the main exit. Second, if there is a fire, get underneath it, as both heat and smoke rise; try crouching, but not if everyone around you is running.

In that case, keep up with the crowd, but try to make your way to its edge, where the flow is weaker, or to get behind a protective structure like a pillar. Try to remain standing and help others to do the same. If there is a collapse, it endangers those who push into it.

Also, try to stay calm and conserve oxygen and energy by not yelling or screaming. Some suggest bracing your arms in front of you, creating an air pocket.

If you fall and cannot get up, some experts recommend trying to protect yourself by lying on your side, covering your head with your arms and drawing in your legs. Others say a curled-up body will only be trampled.

Thanks for the welcome. Actually, Alaska is very connected and wired, kinda like China. Broadband is very popular, and I just haven't made the transition myself.
