The NW (or Riel) Rebellion was a series of skirmishes which lasted 47 days and which involved some engagements between the Canadian militia of about 3000 men and Chief Poundmaker, Chief Big Bear, and of course the Metis. These occured mainly around Batoche and Fort Battleford.

This came on the heels of the US Indian Wars, but was contained and quickly defused.

This brief attempt by Louis Riel to form a loose coalition between Indians and Metis is generally considered an uprising rather than a Civil War. Although it is a very significant part of Canadian History, I don't think it belies the truth of my generality regarding Canadians having avoided the tragedy of a civil war. However, I have no quarrel with your characterizing it as a civil war if you so wish.
