"The NW (or Riel) Rebellion was a series of skirmishes which lasted 47 days and which involved some engagements between the Canadian militia of about 3000 men and Chief Poundmaker, Chief Big Bear, and of course the Metis."

Since when are wars determined by the amount of skirmishes or length of days? Would it have been classified as "war" if it went 50 days and had a couple of extra skirmishes?
