China Unicom plans big debt offer

SHANGHAI (CBS.MW) - China Unicom Telecommunication is planning a massive 10 billion yuan bond issue ($1.2 billion) that would mark the biggest corporate debt offer ever in that country.

"This is just a target, just a plan," said a spokesman for the company. "We're still getting approval from the relevant authorities and it's not final yet," she said.

The country's second-largest cell-phone operator (CHU: news, chart, profile) is planning to use the money to fund the construction of a wireless network it is building across China.

The planned issue would top China Mobile's (HK:0941: news, chart, profile) (CHL: news, chart, profile) (HK:0762: news, chart, profile) 8 billion yuan offer in January and could reportedly come as early as the second half of the year.

With Chinese equity markets undergoing a 20-month-long downturn, companies are turning to the debt markets to fund their expansion with the support of authorities.

Shares of China Unicom rose 3.5 percent to HK$4.40.

Last month, China Unicom launched its nationwide network using CDMA2000 technology.

CDMA was developed by Qualcomm (QCOM: news, chart, profile). Cell phone operators like China Unicom, China Mobile and Japan's DoCoMo (DCM: news, chart, profile) pay fees to use the technology for wireless services.

LG Electronics (LGE), a major handset maker in Korea, said yesterday that it has started supplying rotational camera-mounted GPRS (general packet radio service) color phone sets to a Italian communications company called "Wind."
LGE hopes that the move will lead to a bigger share in the upscale GSM (global system for mobile communications) phone market with its advanced technology and differentiated designs.

The high-tech GPRS G8000 model camera phone features a high-performance 110,000-pixel camera and 65,000-color TFD-LCD screen that stores moving images. It is also fitted with a 40-poly sound-source chip, which can support various multimedia functions.

In addition, the dual folder-type G8000 can transmit data at the speed of 115 kbps. It is also equipped with a super-large 10-line color LCD, allowing users to display various color multimedia data such as virtual characters and photos.

LG's latest handset also features a built-in digital camera and video camcorder function that can make video clips.

"We have recently marketed the third-generation (3G) WCDMA (wideband code-division multiple access) device (U8100) that enables communications with moving images. This time, we also exported our GPRS camera-phone sets to Italy. We expect to establish our reputation in the European market through the camera color phones with hi-tech applications that are guaranteed to get the industry's attention," said Yi Ho, LGE's vice president and GSM overseas marketing team manager.

LG Electronics is set to export various camera-equipped color handsets to major global mobile markets including Europe, China and the United States in the first half of this year.
