The USS Liberty Memorial
ussliberty.org

This web site is dedicated to the memory of thirty-four fine young men
who gave their lives on June 8, 1967, defending the USS Liberty
against a sustained air and sea attack by the armed forces of the State of Israel
During the Six Day War between Israel and the Arab States, the American intelligence ship
USS Liberty was attacked for 75 minutes in international waters by Israeli aircraft and
motor torpedo boats. Thirty-four men died and 172 were wounded.

The attack has been a matter of controversy ever since. Survivors and many key government officials
including Secretary of State Dean Rusk and former JCS Chairman Admiral Thomas Moorer say it was
no accident. Israel and its supporters insist it was a "tragic case of misidentification" and charge that the
survivors are either lying or too emotionally involved to see the truth.

Israel claims they mistook our ship for the out-of-service Egyptian horse carrier El Quseir
and that we brought the attack upon ourselves by operating in a war zone without displaying a flag. Not so.
We were in international waters, far from any fighting, and flew a bright, clean, new American flag.
The flag we flew is on display at the National Cryptologic Museum,
Fort Meade, Maryland and can be seen there, or in the USS Liberty Images Archive.

Our commanding officer, Captain William Loren McGonagle, received the Congressional Medal of Honor
for conspicuous gallantry and intrepedity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty during the attack.
The Congressional Medal of Honor is the highest award our country can bestow.
To avoid embarrassing our attackers, Captain McGonagle's Medal of Honor was presented in a quiet ceremony
in the Washington Navy Yard instead of in the White House by the President as is customary.

The USS Liberty Web Page presents part of the story
along with some historical information and links to other sources.
.................................................................
The USS Liberty Memorial Web Site is a creation of Jim Ennes and Joe Meadors, survivors of the attack,
with support and encouragement from the USS Liberty Veterans Association
and special help from John Gidusko and Gary Harvey

Joe was a signalman on the bridge during the attack
and is a former chairman and president of the USS Liberty Veterans Association

Jim was an officer on the bridge when the attack started
and is author of Assault on the Liberty
(Random House 1980; Ballantine 1986; Reintree Press 2002)
which tells the story

The University of Kansas Military History Department has named this
The Top Military History Web Site in the United States
Check that and other awards we have received.

I never thought of you as a conspiracy theory wacko but I guess I was wrong.
Well, that makes you twice wrong then. I never believe conspiracy theories without good proof. If Ray Duray were still around (is he?), he can testify to that. I've blown his theories out of the water numerous times.

About that "accidental" attack:
There has NEVER been a congressional investigation. There HAS been a NAVY-controlled white-washed investigation of the crew's actions during the attack, but Israel's participation was NOT covered. Even in this, evidence was changed, and officers and crew who knew the answers were not asked the right questions and were told to shut up when they offered information. And now, in 2002, retired Navy captain Ward Boston, one of the Navy's chief legal counsels reporting to Adm. Kidd, who conducted the Navy's inquiry, now says that the Navy inquiry was a sham and a fraud and both he and Adm. Kidd knew that the attack was not an accident but deliberate.

The attack has been a matter of controversy since 1967. Survivors and many key government officials including Secretary of State Dean Rusk and Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Admiral Moorer say the attack was no accident. Two Israeli officers have come forward to admit that the attack was no accident. Yet the Israeli government and its supporters insist it was a "tragic case of misidentification" and charge that survivors and their eyewitness supporters are lying.

It was easily recognizable as an electronics listening ship because of the large amount of electronic gear visible on deck and superstructure. This gear, including a tall Trescomm tower amidships, gave the ship a silhouette unlike that of any other ship in the world.

The ship had its identification number, Gtr5, painted in l0-foot high letters on the bow. This id. number is prominent and visible in all photos of the ship both before and after the attack. The ship also had its name painted on the stern, and a large flag flew from the forward mast.
.............................................................

In the Yerushalmi hearing, the Israelis tried to account for the fact that the MTB radar had showed the ship moving at 30 knots, but a short time afterward they identified the ship as the Egyptian El Quesir, which has a top speed of 15 knots.
............................................................
The Israelis insist in all accounts that the ship had no flag. They also claim that the orbited the ship repeatedly looking for a flag, but could find none and could find no other mark of identification.

The testimony of the crew contradicts these Israeli claims absolutely. Crewmen insist that there was a flag, flying in the wind, and that the Israeli planes attacked straight on without orbiting. They also point out that photos of the ship taken before and after the attack show the identifying number plainly. Also, it is preposterous to claim that the ship would be moving in this area near a war and would show no flag.
............................................................
Testimony of Dwight Porter. Dwight Porter was US ambassador to Lebanon in June 1967. He states that on June 8 CIA men showed him radio transcripts, translated into English, which recorded talk between an Israeli pilot and his home base. The pilot protests that the ship he is attacking is American; the home base orders him to attack anyway.

CONFLICTING COMMENTS REKINDLE LIBERTY DISPUTE

KEY INVESTIGATORS EXPRESS BELIEF THAT ISRAEL DELIBERATELY ATTACKED U.S. SHIP

BBC Four: Isn't it conceivable that the Israelis did think the Liberty was an Egyptian ship?
JH: Not a chance. Mosad and their spying network knew exactly what that horse carrier was, knew its capabilities. They claimed it was the El Quesir. That's not true. It is critical that they maintain it was an accident. After 35 years people are starting to believe it wasn't an accident. They're starting to listen to us.

bbc.co.uk

Accidental like the Japanese happened to be accidentally over Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941 with planes full of bombs.

Oh, and why, if the Israelis are such good buddies of ours, why did they plant a spy (Pollard) in US Navy Intelligence? Yes?

<<Most of the wars in the region revolve around Israel.>>
<that shows how much you know about the region.>
OK. Most of the wars since the formation of Israel. The US was not involved in most wars involving the North American continent until the formation of the US, either.

<<Self defense. You don't get credit as a good guy for self defense.>>
<US attacked iraq to liquidate a potential threat of WMD. Are we (US) no longer good guys in your book?>
Doesn't make us bad guys either. It means we were acting in our own interests.

you never heard of potential Iranian attack?
Potentially, we might be atacked by any nation in the region (including Israel if the Liberty incident means anything). So?

<<Do your friends sink your ships?>>
<Did not we shot down a brit's aircraft recently? Are brits our enemies now>
And we killed some Canadian soldiers in Afghanistan.
The difference is that it was not intentional. The Liberty incident looks like it was.
