I would probably keep the cat if I could.
Hah! I knew it! :-)

I need to be free to pop off to Tucson for weeks or months if need be.
Any friends who would take care of it in your absence?

I regard these "Please provide a temporary home to a poor lost animal" programs as simply a devious scheme by the local Humane Society. :-)

I've got a friend who decided to agree to raise a golden pup until it was ready to begin guide dog training. I told her not to do it; the cops would have a grand theft warrant for her at the end. She did it anyway. Sure enough, as time goes on, she becomes more and more attached to the dog. Mentioning the fact that she has to give it back causes her to almost break down. Then VOILA! She notices the dog is't walking right, takes it to the vet (paid for by the guide dig society) and the dog has hip dysplasia. Disqualified as a guide dog. The guide dog society even agreed to pay for surgery to fix the problem as much as possible (which was actually pretty good). And she gets to keep the dog. The dog has a sweet, gentle disposition, so the society designates it their "ambassadrix". They use it for public occasions and have it visit various places for them.

And the woman has agreed to "raise" no more potential guide dogs for them. :-)
