"Would you say the change has stopped in the past few hundred (or a thousand) years?"

In the last thousand years the Jewish religious attitude of waiting for the return of the Messiah to rescue them has been replaced with the view that people must redeem themselves.

In the christian religion, Jesus's return was always considered imminent. I think, with the passage of time, that view has changed, He's now expected to return sometime in the distant future.

Also, lately in more liberal thinking parts of the world, gender issues concerning godhead have now opened to the notion of a sexual duality.

Also, there was 500 years ago the view that earth was the center of the universe, we now know that is not true, and we've had to adjust our idea of where heaven is. It's no longer up in the sky, but somewhere separate from our current physical reality.
