Indeed... that there was a Nixon era Robert Redford film titled The Candidate shows that awareness of this phenomena (politicians on stage) of our society is not new.

Teddy Kennedy is well- known for being almost unintelligible when he speaks at any length extemporaneously.......

Might be due to the fact that he's in the bag a lot of the time.

The burden of perfection in public speaking expected of politician is just plain unreasonable. Being a good public speaker is a gift. I'd venture not many of us that post here could get by without a stammer, stutter, or badly chosen turn of phrase. I hate speaking before large groups, and don't envy anyone that has to do it for a living.
