" It is my belief that even among the Shi'ites, the appeal of a moderate regime will be felt......... "

Do you have sources which have led you to this belief? Could you post them please.

<We have set up an interim government which will appoint a constitutional commission.>

How is this a step toward freedom? Appointed people will appoint other people, who will make laws and constitutions, none of which flows from "the consent of the governed".

Not only is it a step backward, it is not the step we promised. We promised elections. That was back when we believed our own fantasy, the Myth that Iraqis want a pro-American anti-Islamic secular liberal democracy. As soon as our soldiers on the ground in Iraq figured out reality, the promise was broken, elections were cancelled, and the # of occupation troops needed was increased, from 30,000 (that's what was said before the occupation) to 150,000.

<All that would happen, in my opinion, were we to withdraw would that there would be a bloodbath>

Can't be any worse than the bloodbath that will happen if we don't withdraw.

Hi Neocon; Re: "We have set up an interim government which will appoint a constitutional commission."

Yes, that's how the United States got its Constitution. The French set up an occupation government here and appointed a few American leaders (who had left the country before the revolution), as an interim council. When the Council of Patriots came up with a Constitution, the French reviewed it, made changes so as to be sure that it was True Democracy, (and not Fundamentalist Christianity), and then they gave the 13 States the right to form a government.

After the war, the French kept military bases in our country for 20 years. It's been rumored that they were here only because they were interested in stealing tobacco and spermacetti from us, but it's clear now that they only had our best interests at heart.

There was always a lot of friction between the French forces who were occupying our country and our home grown whackos. The nut cases thought that having French soldiers arbitrarily arresting our citizens in the middle of the night (unable to contact a lawyer, or even speak the same language as the French) was an affront to the nation's pride and honor. But it's clear that the ones who succumbed to French pressure (i.e the cowards) were the ones that were really in favor of a free United States.

There was also some isolated cases of sabotage. For example, a ship filled with American made whale oil was assaulted in the middle of the night, and whackos dressed like English Soldiers emptied the oil into Boston harbor. And a lot of Americans complained when the French occupation forces proved unable to maintain a safe and humane environment. For example, the economy was so badly wrecked that many of our children had to walk to school in the snow with inadequate shoes, especially at the suburban community of Valley Forge. But most Americans accepted the French occupation with a cow-like resignation.

Finally, after eight years of French occupation, our Founding Fathers were able to put together a document that the French agreed would truly make us free. And not a moment too soon.

You know, if the French hadn't been there to create our government for us, it might never had happened. The current complaining about the French not supporting us in Iraq ignores the historical fact that if it were not for French assistance, we'd probably still be a colony of the British. Our whole life would be changed. Our cheerleaders wouldn't be able to "root" at games for the home team.
