The problem with capital punishment is that it's state-sanctioned murder. Particularly, in many cases, where the state didn't take due-care in establishing the innocence or guilt of the convicted, but provided them with inadequate defense. There are countless cases of "open and shut" cases that rely heavily on unreliable witness testimony, where it turns out that the death penalty is meted out on the innocent.

Another thing is revenge of this type a good example for the state to provide to youth? The state is supposed to have a higher sense of justice than common folk. The state should teach that it is possible to forgive for sins of the past. They should also teach that it's possible for one to change for the good. It promulgates a cynical notion that it's OK to seek revenge for a wrong done. So instead of turning the cheek, one should take out a gun and blow your brother away.

Justice is not revenge. Justice is blind and balanced. It should look beyond the emotional demands of the victims for "closure" (which is a euphamism for revenge). With capital punishment, the scales of justice are tipped towards the victim. Victim-oriented justice is just one step away from lynch mob vigilantism.

There iw no theory of justice without retribution. Retribution demonstrates our seriousness about enforcing standards of behavior........
