You may find the DOS program XCOPY does the trick. It's designed for multiple file copying. Once the files are stored in a safe place, you can format the partition.

Kevin, Did you ever find a solution to your problem? I was able to copy my documents to another drive in the DOS mode and then I reformatted the drive. I think the problem is with the drive though because after I reformatted it and tried putting more files onto it it froze my system a couple of times so it may be junk. Not the first time this has happened.
