"the ultimate moment of truth with regard to the overthrow of Saddam.." Increasing the US Vehicle fleet gas efficiency by a few miles per gallon...would have negated the need for all of your well thought out points...and this forum!

No arguments from me Hawk, you have stated my beliefs very well. I believe the President has provided the leadership to begin steering us clear of the disaster course we have been on for the last 20 years.

The warning bells have been ringing since 250+ Marines got killed by Iranian sponsored terrorists in 1983. The fact that this treacherous course began post WWI leads me to believe we have several decades at a minimum before we can feel content.

<<Did it not make sense to overthrow Saddam and set the stage for Iraq to replace Saudi Arabia as the primary energy supplier to the west, thereby permitting the US to pressure the Saudis to crack down on the militant clerics...>> Oil was always center-stage in the invasion of Iraq, and partly for the reasons you suggest. The US never liked the vulnerability of relying on unstable oil suppliers for a strategic commodity. By the way, Japan's invasion of its resource-rich Asian neighbors in WW2 was entirely based on "self-defense", just like our invasion of Iraq was in "self-defense". To them it was self-defense because they needed the resources and wanted to control them directly. Others saw it as raw aggression -- just like many people see our invasion of Iraq as an aggression. The Emperor of Japan would smile to hear your explanation.
