The California recall is not a partisan, Republican-led mugging of Democracy, though Davis is weak and slow. More correctly, the recall should be called a citizen's arrest! And thank God someone finally decided to take action against this bungler! If Davis had principles we might feel sad to see him go. But the fact is, Davis tends to govern from the rear according to the latest polls and what the lobbyists tell him. He is not only tight with law enforcement and prison guard unions, but he has consistently failed to stand up for California law in the face of aggressive attacks by the Feds on California's voter-approved Medical Marijuana Initiative. 10 or 15 years ago Davis would have been viewed as a Republican. Today he is just a faceless bureaucrat, except when leading California into financial ruin. Now that The Terminator has entered the race Davis is doomed. The fact that Arnold is Republican is not relevant. The fact that Davis is a putative "Democrat" is not relevant. What is relevant is that people vote their wallets. Always. By all accounts Davis was slow to act during the "energy crisis" and capitulated at the height of the disaster with secret, backroom deals paying top dollar for long term energy contracts (which he subsequently tried to renege). My utility bill is as high now as it was during the energy crisis! Every month my wallet gets picked and one name is remembered: Davis the Skunk. Californians, from rich to dirt poor pay huge sales taxes. In my town the rate is 7.25% and that applies to everyone, even pensioners and unemployed single moms (but the sheriffs and prison guards got raises!) Every time we go to the store our wallets are picked. One name and one name only comes to mind: Davis the Skunk. California's budget deficit is structural. That means that it won't go away unless expenses are cut or revenues are increased. Davis has used Enron-style accounting tricks to postpone the day of reckoning. Not just this year but last year too. Unfortunately our jobs are leaving the state and the only thing that can solve Davis problems would be a miracle. If he cuts expenses he will alienate the police and prison guards, among others; and if he raises taxes more jobs will leave the state. The latest budget solved no structural problems — the new governor is going to have a huge, mega-billion dollar problem in 2004, unless a miracle happens, such as Armageddon. Now, if we had jobs and income, it would be nice to have the problem of paying high sales taxes and income taxes, but Davis didn't solve the job problem or make California hospitable to employers. And now our wallets are empty. It is Payback Time. It is Terminator Time! People vote their wallets. But in California we have a real problem. You see, Davis stole our wallets and took all the money. Then he slashed the wallets with a razor, poured lighter fluid on them and set them on fire! Then he pulled out his wank, pissed on the ashes and dumped the remains into a paper bag. Then he had his dog shit in the bag, which he lit on fire and threw on our porches! Plan on having a new governor soon. Davis is history.
