NO infrastructure is self supporting
Telephone? Electric power? Or are those suddenly not infrastructure?

There's also a matter of comparative cost. That gets to the economic efficiency issue. The transportation you favor is ENORMOUSLY expensive. So expensive that very little of it can be afforded. Unless you're willing to go back to a 19th century transportation system, you HAVE to have roads and bridges. You DON"T have to have empty trains that cost hundreds of million per mile.

If roads don't pay for themselves via tollroads and the like, and bridges don't pay for themselves

Do you know how much the state and federal governments collect in fuel taxes?? Motorists pay plenty for the roads they drive on. And if it wasn't for ridiculous laws like Davis-Bacon, road construction and maintenance dollars would go even further.
