I know that but the problem is those fuel taxes are also paid by public transportation. And Bart pays some exorbinant charges in "airport taxes" whatever those are because they now have a station at the airport.

The point I'm trying to make is that taxes of all sorts pay for these facilities and to say that you aren't going to build trains because they aren't "self funding" is a bit of BS.

I'll tell you what, I'll bet the Caltrain system which goes from San Mateo to the Pac Bell baseball stadium is the MOST EFFICIENT use of money to transport people there is. It is a fifty year old train system for one thing that is often fully loaded. I don't know how to verify this but I doubt very seriously that every public trans project is any more "porkish" than tons of road construction.
