I had my fourteen year old grand daughter over here for a month two years ago. Her spare time was spent glued to MTV, and I got an earful. I think the black community is just as much "up in arms" about Hip Hop as the white community is. The "Gangsta Rap" is bad, and getting worse. But when we talk about it we sound like our Parents from the 50s. It aint the same, but it seems like it to our kids.

The Fugs were an anomaly of one. They didn't personally get involved in shoot-outs, murder, etc.

The gangsta rap guys are all over the place. A lot of them are dead at a young age. Many are in jail. Locally, C-Murder got convicted of, you guessed it, murder.

The only deaths during our salad days were self-inflicted, i.e., J. Hendrix, Janis Joplin, J. Morrison.

The difference between The Fugs and the ganstas is the difference between night and day. The Fugs did not influence overall popular culture. The same is not true of the gangstas.

I don't know if the fashion of wearing trousers low on the hips, exposing just about everything, is a local or a national thing. Its origin lies in the fact that prisoners are not allowed to have belts. Consequently, their pants drop. The kids on the street mimic this because they think of going to prison as conferring status.

Going to prison was never a Sixties status badge.

We have that Fugs album - I think we have four, the first three and maybe the live album. We definitely have the one with "Saran Wrap." They're funny.

But the sex is joyous, there's no violence, no rape, no prostitution, no boasting about going to prison. No celebration of robbery and murder. Very different from misogynistic violent ghetto music.

I am a big fan of so-called "black music" or "Devil's music" going back to the 19th century, starting with ragtime, through blues (especially blues), rhythm & blues, jazz, rock, soul, Motown, etc. I even like a little bit of rap, e.g., the Beasty Boys (but they're white).

This is something completely different. It's not soul, it's soul-killing.
