Ted, the L.A. story you cite isn't an example of affirmative action, but an example of community involvement by citizens, businesses, and celebrities. This is an example of a real solution to a real problem.

Affirmative action comes either in the form of quotas, reverse discrimination, or subtle subjective influences. It's an example of a fake solution to a real problem.

Ted,

re: The way I see it.......we need to defend ourselves against the violent acts of terrorism as much as possible.

There are probably 10000 things that are more likely to kill you than terrorism. 9/11 has created a terrorphobia in this country; remember, just two events in our lifetimes, both by the same guy, who now lives in a cave.

We've reshuffled our goverment because of 9/11, we've given up privacy rights because of 9/11, we've changed our foreign policy because of 9/11, we've gone to war twice because of 9/11, we've gone to deficit spending because of 9/11 (just when the boomers are about to retire), and we've generally become obsessed with trying to secure every conceivable, remotely possible scenario where a terrorist could get to us, because of 9/11. This is not a rational response to the least of all likely threats to your life.

The war on terror is a political convenience to advance an agenda. Your wife or your neighbor or a ladder is 10,000 times more likely to kill you than OBL. Terrorism is only successful if folks are terrorized; OBL, with help from our current administration, have managed to make 9/11 the most successful terrorist act ever.

John

or work to get rid of the conditions that cause terrorism.

What, in hell, do you think Bush has done??? This is precisely what the Iraq war was about.

That means working actively to rid the third world of poverty, illiteracy and regimes that would thwart this effort.

Bizarre remark from someone who didn't want to eliminate Saddam. Just downright strange. Unless you think "literacy" is "Saddam Worship". Today, six months later, Iraqi kids are for the first time not opening their days with a pledge to Saddam.

Not in a violent way like we did with Iraq but in non violent ways of which there are plenty.

Why don't you just tell the thread how YOU would have "nonviolently" gotten rid of Saddam...
