And thus, my two friends, we end up with a convoluted, interest group oriented, tax system that requires armies of accountants to stretch the situation to favor our own "selves".

In the end, only corporations collect taxes in the form of a consumption tax from thosae who self elect to use the products/services desired.

The rest is class warfare and I believe that the U.S. is perhaps the one place in the world where that should not happen.

Surely opportunity is there for all who seek it.

The rest is a transfer tax - and what man is so good that he should decide what another man should do with that, which is his?

Certainly not me.

Bob

Or perhaps we should live in a world without kids??

Are you saying you only had kids for the tax break?

My point is flat tax proposals fail each time because nobody will give up their pet deduction. You let me keep my deductions for $20K a year mortgage interest, $8K in property taxes and I would trade you for your $20K for 2 kids and $25K for a third. Pretty soon we are back to the present mess as the above trades are EXACTLY what gave us our current tax code.

Why not just expempt the first $50K in income, index it to inflation and say "no deductions?" This would let the smart folks making tax dodges find more productive jobs besides screwing you and I out of tax collections.
