It is very interesting that Bush has been so nice to the Chinese Govt regarding Taiwan. It seems that the US is using the old carrot and stick with China. Taiwan of course being the carrot. What do they want from China is IMHO

1) Obviously more imports of American goods - planes, farm equipment, agricultural stuff. Obviously beneficiary is Boeing. Any ideas who else could be the undeserving winners?
2) Even more importantly, US needs China's help in stabilizing the US treasury markets. We need some one to buy 10 year US Treasury. THis is key to holding the charade up at least till Nov 2004.

If this is the case, and China plays along - then there is going to be a fair amount of stability - no major selloffs, and rising US exports to China of state sanctioned products.

The other question is - what gives Taiwan the balls to go ahead with the referendum after this statement by Bush. Is the game deeper?

What do you think?

"The Bush Administration issued an unusually strong warning to Taiwan yesterday not to hold a referendum that could fuel the island's independence movement."

Jay,

you lost me on that one. If US creates some type of Taiwan China tension, wouldn't the USD be dumped as China's way of responding?

Judging from the body language of today's photo opp, it sure did not appear Bush was welcoming a friend, or even a guest to the White House. I am sure the Chinese premier is receiving a "lecture" as we speak.

<<sharp/sustained rally of the USD IF AND ONLY IF the Taiwan situation develops in a way that see tension sharply rise and that can happen easily if Bush had said something like 'the future of Taiwan should be determined by the Taiwanese' as opposed to 'We oppose any unilateral decision to change>>

Sorry, Jay. E no go happen, o!

Picure a president with the pineaple to peel a.k.a Iraq and an election coming, Not likely to happen. The European companies have hedged, no problem to go down to 1.25.

Reaching 1.35 then Europe may be taking some acton.
